Confirming your authority to update information

What’s required to manage an FSP’s information on the register

Before you can manage information about a financial service provider (FSP), you’ll need a RealMe® login and an online services account with the FSPR. You may also need to confirm with us your authority to act for the FSP.

Who needs to confirm – and who doesn’t

The person or organisation who registers an FSP will automatically have authority to update its information on the register.

After an FSP is registered, others who are tasked with updating information and completing transactions on behalf of an FSP – such as directors, registered individuals, accountants or lawyers – must confirm their authority with us.

How to confirm authority

Before you can ask us to confirm your authority, you must have:

  • a RealMe® login
  • an online services account with the Financial Service Providers Register (FSPR).

To submit a request to confirm your authority, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your online services account.
  2. From the dashboard, use the search options to find and select the FSP.
  3. You can search using the FSP’s name, registration number or NZBN.
  4. On the ‘View FSP Details’ screen, choose the ‘Request Authority’ button.
  5. You must confirm that you’re legally entitled to file documents in respect to the FSP. You must also confirm that you understand the implications making an unauthorised request for access.
  6. To complete your request, you’ll need to upload either proof of your identity or a letter of authority. The documentation you’ll need to provide will depend on how you’re associated to the FSP.

If you are the FSP

If you’re registered as an individual FSP you will need to:

  • confirm that you are the FSP, and
  • provide proof of your identity by uploading a copy of your driver licence or passport.

If you’re a director for the FSP

If the FSP is an entity you will need to:

  • confirm that you are a director of the FSP, and
  • provide proof of your identity by uploading a copy of your driver licence or passport.

If you’re an authorised agent

If you’re acting on behalf of the FSP, for instance you’re the FSPs accountant or lawyer, you will need to:

  • confirm that you’re to an authorised agent, and
  • upload a copy of signed letter of authority.

We have Letter of Authority templates you can use, choose the one that suits your situation:

If your login is part of an organisation account

This type of account is typically used by professional organisations, such as financial service providers with more than one person managing FSP registrations. You must provide us with a letter of authority signed by a senior person within the organisation.

If your login is an individual account

This type of account tends to be used by sole practitioners. You must provide us with a letter of authority signed by the FSP. If the FSP is an entity, the letter must be signed by a senior person within the FSP.

Confirm your authority

What happens next

We aim to process your request within 3 working days. We'll let you know by email if it has been accepted or, if rejected, the reason why.

Revoking authority

Only the Registrar can revoke authority. To request that this be done, you must complete the required online form (see link below).

If you have an individual user account, the request must come from you, and include your name and the FSP number to which the authority applies. If you have an organisation user account, the email must come from a senior person within the organisation and must include the name and FSP number to which the authority applies.

Once a request has been accepted, you’ll receive an email to confirm that authority has been revoked.
